Denicka Posadas was an Eco-Apprentice in 2018. In December Denicka answered questions about the Eco-Apprentice program.

1. How long were you at LEJ?

I was an eco-apprentice for LEJ around 9 months, I wanted to go on further but during that time I had a lot on my plate with multiple jobs and school.

2. What initially drew you to LEJ?

I was drawn to LEJ because I took an environmental justice class. It was a confusing class to me because I couldn’t comprehend how environmental justice wasn’t validated through policy. LEJ drew me in with the many environmental projects they did and how it was based in Hunter’s Point.

3. What did you get out of the experience that you weren’t expecting?

I wasn’t expecting how healing nature was. It was a community inviting and always learning environment experience at LEJ. From the different volunteers, staff members, and visitors. I also learned from working for LEJ, what ways can I improve with myself, growing from my lessons.

4. What was the most valuable thing you gained during your time here?

One of the most valuable things I’ve gained at LEJ was learning to maximize my time and experience there. I was juggling through a lot those times I worked there and I wished if I can re-do it again I could do a better job, or invest myself in something I wanted to research. So, I would say is learning how to spend time wisely.

5. What are you up to now?

As of now, I’m working at UCSF as a referral coordinator. It’s a drastic difference from LEJ. From working to the outdoors to complete office work. I think LEJ gave me that great insight into what it’s like to work not in an office and how I enjoy it much more than an office. As of right now I am building my experience and learning UCSF’s culture.

6. Where did you go immediately following your Eco-Apprenticeship?

I didn’t immediately go anywhere after my eco-apprenticeship. During that time I kind of tried to balance out my life by letting go of some jobs and focusing on school.
